Fulbright Scholars Prepare for US Education

PHNOM PENH — Eight Cambodian students were awarded a prestigious Fulbright scholarship this year to pursue higher education in leading US universities.


In interviews with VOA Khmer, the students said they hoped to help develop their country more on their return.
“They’re going to give the youth of Cambodia hope,” US Ambassador William Todd told VOA Khmer. “Whether they are going to the government or going to industries or law or education, they’re going to give the youth of this country a future. They’re going to grow the economy, and they’re going to help the country move forward.”

Students Demand More Information on Resource Extraction

Results from a recent survey of 377 university students in the capital by the NGO 
Forum found a majority did not know about the management and usage of those funds.
Most Cambodian university students have heard of their country’s fledging extractive industry. But with little access to information, few are aware of how revenue from this industry is being managed. Most of this information remains unavailable, and some are now voicing their concerns about corruption and misuse of those revenues.

“The news on television tells us little about mining extractions,” student Saing Kanha told VOA Khmer.

The Combined Federal Campaign for 2011
US federal employees have begun a fundraising campaign for 2011, in a drive to collect money for local and international organizations.

The Combined Federal Campaign is undertaken each year and allows US government employees to deduct money from their incomes to go toward thousands of different organizations, including charities and NGOs.
